Tradisi Batabuik: Pergulatan Antara Nilai Religius dengan Komodifikasi Pariwisata dalam Masyarakat Pariaman di Sumatera Barat

Tabuik is a local tradition that has developed in the Pariaman community of West Sumatra. This tradition is claimed to be a religious tradition which is interpreted as a symbol in commemorating the death of the grandson of the Prophet in the war in the Karbala Field. Many rituals are carried out in this tradition process, starting from the rite of maambiak tanah ke sungai, maambiak/manabang banana stem, maatam, marandai, maarak jari-jari, maarak saroban, tabuik naiak pangkek, maoyak tabuik, until closed with the rite of throwing tabuik into the sea. The rites are manifested in the form of processions (arakan). This research is a descriptive qualitative research with literature study methods. Initially, Tabuik was carried out as a sacred ceremony and contained high religious value for tabuik practitioners, with the preparation of Tabuik events as well as celebrating religious holidays. However, the current implementation of Tabuik is more about showing the entertainment or tourism value of Pariaman City. Since the local government carried out a tourism development program, Tabuik has become one of the tools used for the benefit of tourist visits. The inclusion of tabuik as a program of interest for tourist visits, caused commodification in the Tabuik tradition. There have been various changes in the implementation of Tabuik, especially about changes in its ritualization.
