Abstract

Differences in the variants of Qur’anic recitation (qirā’āt) have significant implications for the interpretation and understanding of its verses. These variations, particularly in verses related to legal rulings such as matters of ṭahārah (ritual purity), can lead to differing perspectives among exegetes. The purpose of this study is to examine the influence of qirā’āt differences on the jurisprudential interpretive approach in Rawā’iʿ al-Bayān by ʿAli al-Ṣābūnī. This research adopts a qualitative approach with a library research method. The primary source is the Rawā’iʿ al-Bayān itself, while secondary sources include literature on the biography and thought of ʿAli al-Ṣābūnī, other works of Qur’anic exegesis, and relevant academic studies. The analysis involves identifying verses with variations in recitation, then tracing their implications for the legal reasoning presented by the exegete. The findings reveal that differences in qirā’āt influence how the exegete understands and interprets the text, including in deriving legal conclusions. ʿAli al-Ṣābūnī consistently employs the qirā’āt sabʿah (seven canonical, mass-transmitted readings) as the foundation for his interpretation, presenting the views of various juristic schools and engaging in tarjīḥ (preference) based on arguments he deems strongest. While he reports opinions from different schools of law, he does not confine himself to a single school; rather, he adopts a balanced and reasoned approach. These findings affirm that the study of qirā’āt plays a significant role in enriching exegetical analysis, particularly in jurisprudence-oriented interpretations.
