Abstract:Â This study explores the Reformist-Modernist Islamic ideology found in the
exegeses authored by Mahmud Yunus, Hamka, A. Hassan, and Hasbi Ash-Shiddiqy. It is
motivated by the need to understand how these scholars bridged Islamic values with the
challenges of the modern era. The research aims to uncover the key characteristics of their
ideology, the methods they employed in their interpretations, and their relevance to
contemporary Islamic developments. Using a qualitative approach and content analysis, this
study examines their primary works. The findings reveal that Mahmud Yunus, Hamka, A.
Hassan, and Hasbi Ash-Shiddiqy emphasized purifying Islamic teachings from taqlid (blind
imitation) and bid’ah (innovation), while highlighting the principle of monotheism and
interpreting Islamic teachings within the social, cultural, and political contexts of their time.
In conclusion, their exegeses reflect efforts to renew the understanding of Islam, staying
rooted in tradition while remaining relevant to the needs of the present day.
