Abstract

The study of discourse has become one of the important topics widely discussed by intellectuals from various disciplines, thus giving birth to various theories according to their respective points of view. The many criticisms of these theories have actually strengthened the interest of academics to develop discourse studies in a more multidisciplinary direction. In this framework, Norman Fairclough attempts to reconstruct discourse theory as a response to previous theories that are considered lopsided and partial based on their respective scientific approaches. One of the films that contains social criticism is Warkop DKI Reborn, a comedy film that satirically highlights various social issues, such as corruption, collusion, and nepotism (KKN), violations of the law, and misuse of state facilities. Through comedy elements, this film conveys critical messages in an entertaining way, making it easier for the audience to accept. Films not only function as a means of entertainment, but also as a medium for social reflection that is able to convey criticism of various problems in society. This study aims to analyze the discourse of social criticism in the film Warkop DKI Reborn using Norman Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis (AWK) approach. This analysis model consists of three main dimensions, namely: text, which focuses on the use of language and comedy elements in the film; discursive practice, which examines how the discourse is produced and received by society; and social practice, which examines how the criticism in this film relates to social and political conditions in Indonesia. The research method used is critical discourse analysis, which allows for an in-depth study of how language and humor in the film can construct and convey social criticism. The results of the study show that Warkop DKI Reborn uses various comedy techniques, such as slapstick, satire, and verbal humor, to criticize existing social realities. In this way, the film not only functions as entertainment, but also as a tool for social reflection that is able to build public awareness of the various problems raised.
